At least 17 people reportedly arrested at University of Texas, Dallas; police move against student protesters at campuses across the US

When Meghna Nair, a second-year student at the University of California, Los Angeles, saw a masked group of people headed toward the pro-Palestine encampment on campus late Tuesday evening, she expected trouble.

But the violence that unfolded on the public university’s campus overnight and the slow response from authorities shocked Nair and other UCLA students.

I knew where they were going. I had an idea what they planned to do. I didn’t know what to do.”

This is like sacred ground to me. It reminded me of January 6. It was terrifying.”

I was on the phone with my girlfriend, and I was like, what the fuck is happening right now? What the actual fuck? I’ve never seen this in real life. This is stuff that only happens in movies.”

While men are disproportionally affected by conditions that cause early death, women are left with higher levels of illness and disability

Women live longer than men but experience more years in poor health, according to a global gender health gap analysis that experts say underlines an urgent need for action to boost women’s health.

‘Unethical’ junk food packaging manipulates children into craving sweets, report claims

Bite Back, a Jamie Oliver campaign group, found the 10 biggest producers reel in young shoppers with attention-grabbing colours and cartoons

Food companies are using bright colours and cartoon characters in an “unethical” effort to manipulate children into wanting the sweets and crisps they make, a report has claimed.

Bite Back, a campaign group that is part of the chef Jamie Oliver’s empire, asked nutrition experts to analyse 262 sweet food products sold in the UK with packaging likely to appeal to children made by the 10 biggest food companies.

78% of products were deemed unhealthy because of their fat, salt or sugar content.

67% of those featuring a character were unhealthy.

80% of products used bright colours as well as fun patterns and lettering to attract children’s attention.

‘This is cleansing’: Dublin sends in police and buses to dismantle tent city

Shocked people from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria herded on to coaches as 200 tents removed and streets cleaned

The convoy arrived just after sunrise: a stream of police vehicles, council trucks, mounted cranes and coaches, ready to dismantle a tent city of migrants and refugees in the heart of Dublin that had become too big, too visible, too political.

They fenced off streets and herded shocked, sleepy men from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and other countries on to buses and began to extirpate about 200 tents, gradually extinguishing all traces of the camp, but no amount of sweeping and hosing could remove the whiff of elections and diplomacy gone wrong.
